REFERENCE SIRES

Dressage is, and always has been, a passion. Because of this I like a horse to be able to really move; have functional, expressive paces. With this in mind, I endeavour to use bloodlines that produce good movement, or genetics that are proven in the dressage arena.

Our imported stallion, Infante XXXVIII, is by Lotero II (1993 Champion of Spain, Doma Classica & 1994 Champion of the Breed ECUMAD, Spain), a stallion of largely Military lines.
The bloodlines of the Yeguada Militar - Spain’s Military Stud - carry a reputation worldwide, and write many pages in the rich history of the PRE.  Lotero II is a paternal grandson of Gemelo II, and a maternal great-grandson of Agente. Lotero carries a double cross, through his paternal line, of Bilbaino III, a Terry stallion used in the foundation of the famous Cardenas Stud.

Lotero II is renowned for transmitting his fabulous movement. All his progeny we viewed at Yeguada Ovelar had super movement – a mix of elasticity, looseness, swing and a natural ability for lengthened trot – including those from his daughters by other stallions. Lotero is the father of Piconero IV, who is competing successfully at Grand Prix in Spain.

Leyenda XXXVIII, our imported PRE mare is by the beautiful golden buckskin PRE stallion, Clavijo, who produces progeny with spectacular movement.

Clavijo has progeny exported across Europe. One of his young sons recently won Youngstock Champion of Movement. Clavijo’s full sister, Mundaca II, has reached Qualified status in the Spanish Studbook, based on her show successes.

Clavijo’s breeding is a solid balance of Urquijo and Military. Both his male and female line goes back to Jopo – a grey stallion of Urquijo and Terry breeding. Jopo was a grandson of Bilbaino III, a foundation stallion for the renown Cardenas Studfarm. Clavijo also carries a double cross of the black mare Dulzona, who is a Maluso granddaughter.

The pedigree of Clavijo reflects the success of the “nick” of Military and Carthusian lines in producing superb movement.

Imprevisto VII, our colt foal is by Especial IV.

Especial was chosen to cover Leyenda prior to her departure to Australia. We felt his excellent walk (huge overtrack!) and canter, would complement Leyenda’s superb trot. He had a real presence about him, showing lots of Spanish brio and pride, and his foals at Las Cadenas were stunning.

Especial, primarily a breeding stallion, has been shown successfully in morphology and movement classes throughout Spain, and trains at basic level dressage. He is owned by Yeguada Las Cadenas and has been used extensively over the stud’s mares.

Interestingly he appears to be a double pearl on a red base with a grey gene….! He has produced mostly grey and bay foals, but has also thrown black, buckskin, double pearl and true roan foals. He is one of a rare handful of double pearl PRE stallions worldwide. Champagne, pearl and other dilute and cream colours are all officially recognised as acceptable colours by the Spanish Stud Book.

Especial’s morphology is consistent with the classically baroque type of PRE horse, with a broad, wide body, compact in stature, with excellent bone. He stands approx. 15.3hh.

Especial carries a double cross of the stallion Oficial XXI, who is a grandson of Agente (by Maluso) and Goron II (by Bilbaino III). Interestingly, another double pearl stallion, Avispado XVIII is by Oficial XXI from an Oficial XXI daughter, so I suspect the pearl gene may come from this line.

Australis Romanza has a fantastic mix of Romero Benitez, Terry & Military lines. Her sire Romerito, is a paternal grandson of imported Romero Benitez stallion Justiciero IV, and through his dam carries a double cross of Maluso.

Maluso is the single most important horse in the history of the Spanish breed. He is considered by many to exemplify the classic old 'military type' of Spanish horses and is among the most recognised names in Spanish Military breeding. He sired approximately 150 offspring, 115 of which were themselves registered in the Spanish Studbook as producers.

Maluso has been described as ’pivotal in the evolution of change in the Spanish horse’. This is understood to relate most particularly to movement. His offspring expressed a notably elastic movement that carried through the line, and laid the foundation for the success of the Spanish horse in modern dressage.

Our mare Danza is by Corveto IV, a beautiful dark bay stallion, with a rather large white blaze, standing at 15.3hh. He was a great grandson of Maluso, through his sire, Rufian (imp) but was mostly Terry breeding. He had such a lovely, amenable nature that he was often pulled out of the paddock after 3 years break, and shown in harness, in costume & ridden classes at the local show! He was a classical type of stallion with elevated movement. Corveto sired over 40 progeny, and was the main breeding stallion for El Caballero Stud in Vic for many years. His progeny provided the foundations for many studs in Australia.

Danza’s dam, Jacaranda XII is a Maluso granddaughter through her sire Embajador II. Embajador II was the sire of over 50 progeny in Australia, which include Dacio IV , Dacio VII (black), Don Ladoro, El Muchacho, Encantador, Falconero II & III, Jocoso X (black), Rufian and Spanish Tempo. Jacaranda is the only female from Formentera (by Romero Benitez stallion Cazador VII), and is a full sister to Formentero I, II & III (the latter standing at Simanda Park Andalusians, WA).
